Legal Assistance for Seniors' is pleased to announce its 8th Annual Conference on Elder Abuse will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.

Please save that date and spread the word to friends and colleagues interested in fields related to aging, family violence and elder abuse.

With our growing elderly community & with elder abuse on the rise, it is more important than ever to bring experts in the fields of aging and elder abuse together to discuss, learn about, and forge solutions to identify, prevent, and fight elder abuse.

Keynote Address:

We are honored to have Marie-Therese Connolly give the keynote address. Connolly is a leading voice in efforts to prevent the suffering of older adults and ensure that elder abuse becomes a priority on the national agenda. Connolly is a recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Award for her national leadership in combating elder abuse.

As former director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Elder Justice and Nursing Home Initiative, she developed new theories of liability and novel investigation and litigation strategies that led to successful prosecution of cases of abuse and neglect in nursing homes. She was also instrumental in the drafting and passage of the Elder Justice Act, the first piece of federal legislation to address the issue specifically. She continues this work as founder and director of the Life Long Justice initiative.

Continuing Education Credits:

Credits are available for California Attorneys, Behavioral Scientists (MFT, LCSW, LEP, LPCC), Professional Fiduciaries, Certified Care Managers, and Registered Nurses.

Pending approval, credits may also be available for Psychologists, Public Administrators, Guardians and Conservators. Please inquire.

Incorporating international norms and human rights mechanisms into advocacy strategies can yield powerful results in advancing civil rights and social justice. This conference features some of the country’s most experienced practitioners. Topics include the use of United Nations human rights mechanisms, the Inter-American Human Rights System, and litigation of international norms in domestic fora, as well as implementation of human rights standards through policy reform at the local and state levels, and documentation of human rights abuses. Public interest and criminal defense attorneys as well as advocates focused on civil rights and social justice issues, domestic and internationally, will gain a fundamental understanding of how to use the international human rights framework to protect their clients’ basic rights and freedoms. This training has been approved for over 10 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit hours by the State Bar of California.
